In Romeo and Juliet, Lady Capulet and the Nurse are a great example of a foil relationship between two people. Shakespeare makes Lady Capulet and the Nurse foils by his use of different syntax and diction between the two. Throughout the entire passage, Lady Capulet is shown using long and winding sentences. Lines 17-32 are entirely Lady Capulet describing a future love that could happen between Juliet and Paris. Lady Capulet says that Juliet needs to “examine every married lineament” and “see how one another leads content”. Lady Capulet has very long sentences and paragraphs to describe one simple idea that the Nurse sums up in one line. These two women have different goals set for Juliet and that also makes them foil characters. Also, the way both characters address Juliet shows a different relationship they have with her. Lady Capulet addresses her as “thee” and “Juliet”, while the nurse addresses her in a much less formal and a much friendlier way, calling her “girl”. The way characters present themselves to others is one of the ways for the readers to decipher and truly understand their personalities. In conclusion, it is important that Lady Capulet and the Nurse are foils to differentiate their position in society and their relationship with Juliet.
