Today, Mrs. Ashley Fogarty came into class to talk to us about her life as a Physical therapist. Her presentation included many things such as how to become a PT, the availability of jobs, and day to day life. Mrs. Fogarty’s presentation began with a brief overview of the field. Being a Physical therapist includes promoting the ability to move, improved strength, improved range of motion, better balance, increasing endurance, reducing pain, and preventing disabilities. After explaining the field, the presentation moved onto describing typical settings that a Physical therapist may work in. A PT may work in hospitals, outpatient care, home health agencies, schools, and nursing homes. This flexibility is the reason that Physical Therapy is in such high demand currently. After completing college, a student must complete the GRE standard test and get an exceptional grade. Next, a student must apply for and get into PT school. One very important point that was emphasized by Mrs. Fogarty was on finding a pre acceptance program. A pre acceptance program makes it much easier to get into PT school. PT school is full time graduate school with summers consisting of clinicals. A clinical is where a student chooses a PT clinic to shadow and then proceeds to observe for 8 weeks. After completing PT school, the new physical therapist must complete the final board exam in order to get a license. Once a board exam has been completed, passed, and the Physical therapist has acquired their state license it is now time to find a job. Jobs, while always difficult to find are easier to find in the Physical Therapy world. This is due to all of the available locations for therapist to work in.
