The two book Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehsi Coates and How to Slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America by Kiese Laymon present a similar issues of racial discrimination faced by the black community on a daily bases. I found these books similar in the sense that they are discussing the same issues to some degree but have a different perspective and attitude in presenting them. For example in Coates book he discussed the history, present and future of the black community, whereas Laymon is laying out his experiences that he’s faced rather than relying on history to get his point across. Both books are written as letters to someone the authors care about and hold dear to them. Coates writes this book as a letter for his son, he stated.…

Ta-Nehisi Coates’ epistolary Between the World and Me has become a literary symbol for the Black Lives Matter Movement. Structurally, Between the World and Me is a direct descendant of The Fire Next Time; both texts were written as letters to male heirs and released at pivotal points in their respective Black social movements. Drawing on the literary legacies of the Wright school of naturalism and the Black Arts Movement, Coates’ work occupies a space between the two. However, Between the World and Me promotes a slightly more optimistic outlook than Wright’s school of naturalism, but also offers a more honest view of African American life than Black Arts Movement writers. Additionally, Coates’ work goes beyond simply straddling the ideologies…

However, but by analysing globalisation this way, we see underlying structures that link seemingly unrelated aspects, thus allowing for a more robust understanding of the wider globalisation phenomena. The nature of these underlying structures is a point of ongoing contention for sociologists. Functionalists argue that although society is made up of individual actors making decisions for themselves, the move towards globalisation is society as a whole coming to a natural equilibrium, with mutual benefits for everyone. Conversely, conflict theorists see globalisation more sceptically, pointing to the exploitative nature of modern globalisation…
