The objective for the Lesson 1 requires the focus student retell a story from beginning to end utilizing the words first, next and last. Sarah needs support to help her retell the details (key events, characters and setting) of stories in correct sequence. In the lessons, I will prompt Sarah to look at and/or point to pictures in the text to find answers to questions. I will support her by modeling how to ask and answer questions about familiar text in order to peak her interest and offer her a challenge based on my assessment of her strengths and needs. I will have her repeat questions and respond in complete sentences. I will provide opportunities for choral response of key details (for example “We are going to read about __, and then follow up by asking her to reiterate, “What are we going to read about?”) The usage of sentence starters, such as “First we do …..” to support expressive language in retelling the story.
