In the film, they showed two different types of masters. The first master had a small planation. He did indeed treat them better by having bible reading and leisure time. He gave sympathy towards Solomon Northup. From the beginning, he gave him something to hold from the past which was a string instrument. He also came running to cut the rope when one of the overseer let Northup get strangled for a long period of time. But due to Northup confession about being a free man, Master Ford went with his gut about the rules of slaves being property and decided to sell him. This master struggled being a slave owner. While, Master Epps struggled by holding his power. He used all punishments to be the best and also not to feel powerless towards the slaves. This led to him being a alcoholic and losing his mentality. He had situations with his cotton fields, with it being exposed by insects and a particular slave woman that troubled his marriage.

They are different perspectives and emotions throughout the film. They showed how an overseer’s actions towards slaves can escalate to the point of killing them. The film expressed how the masters had to show power, towards the slaves ad also their wives. It showed the appearance of slaves living habits by them living in small cabins and sleeping on the hard wood floors. The image towards the whole movie was very dull; it did not show any type of appreciation of having slaves. For example the cabins colors and how the slaves were dressed. This expressed the plantation lifestyle was not a happy successful
