More than 3 million people are mentally impaired every year in the United States. Some people are mentally impaired and not able to understand basic things. “Flowers for Algernon” by Daniel Keyes, is about a mentally impaired man was able to become the smartest man in the world with an IQ over two-hundred in less than 2 weeks. Charley Gordon is a thirty-seven year old man who receives “a one of a kind surgeries” that allows his IQ to triple is a few weeks. He becomes the smartest man in the world and learns college subjects overnight. The surgery has a downfall, but it helps mankind learn more about the human brain. There are more benefits from Charlie’s experiment than there are costs.

Now I know what It means to pull a “Charlie Gordon,” I’m ashamed.” (Keyes, 231) Before Charlie had the surgery, He always acted like a child, and he was not able to tell if somebody was laughing at him or laughing with him. His friends were not really his friends, and they laughed at him because he had disabilities. After he had the surgery, he was starting to learn that not everybody was his friend. He learned they just like to laugh at him because he is always making mistakes. He also realised that the world was larger than the factory that he worked at and his house/lab he lived in. He also started to remember things that happened with more detail. The operation can help people who have different or strange friends, It can also help them if they are being bullied.
