In Daniel Keyes’ story, Flowers for Algernon, Dr. Nemur and Dr. Strauss perform surgery to make Charlie three times smarter. Even though the story is fictional, doctors today can do many things to alter a person’s appearance or personality. After reading the article, “ Ethical Issues in Flowers for Algernon”, I came up with three reasons for surgery being unethical. These reasons are misleading role models, possibilities of overcoming obstacles that mental illnesses cause, and Patient not having a say on their operation. On the other hand, some people support surgery to change a person’s appearance or personality. This point of view makes sense because People have the right to do what they want with their body. Surgery can help people who really need it. People who are born with disabilities that can only be treated through surgery.
Social media has had a big impact on our lives. At the early age of eight, kids start using social media. The media focuses on the less important things in life such as celebrities and what they are up to. This impacts a child’s life because they are focused on the unnecessary things. Temple Grandin an autistic woman who invented the squeeze machine,which is used to calm people with autism, has achieved so much in her lifetime. Temple was diagnosed with autism as a child. Despite her disabilities Temple has written multiple books and is an advocate for autistic community.
