In many cases, knowing about something can make life a little better, however knowing, can also make someone's life turn upside down. In the texts “Flowers for Algernon” by Daniel Keyes and the biblical story “The Garden of Eden” the author shows that people who are not as intelligent as most, such as Charlie, Adam, and Eve, lived happier when they did not notice the troubles of the world. These texts portray the theme of ignorance is bliss, meaning not knowing about it leads to not worrying about it. In the story, “Flowers for Algernon”, the main character, Charlie Gordon, is mentally retarded. Before his operation all Charlie wanted to be is smart and like other people, but before he became a genius his life was better. He always saw …show more content…
God warns them not to eat the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil or they will die. Both of them are naked, though that did not occur to them. When the serpent convinced Eve to eat the apple and then Eve corniced Adam their whole view of the world is changed. “Sudden they realize that they are naked and sew fig leaves together to cover themselves. They also try to hide from god, who when he discovers their disobedience and newly attained knowledge expels them from the Garden of Eden, and codems them to a life of physical labor, pain, sorrow and finally death itself, when they will return to the dust from whence they came.” (Genesis 2-3) When Adam and Eve ate the apple they lost all of their intelligence. Before the serpent had convinced them to eat the apple they were joyfully living a life in the garden where God wanted them to be. Although if they never knew about the tree, or the tree never existed then they would still be alive. Even though they had no idea about anything they lived a life where there were no struggles and no pain. If they just did not know about having intelligence they would still be in the garden where they can cherish the life they …show more content…
Charlie, Adam, and Eve all did not know about being smart until they were exposed to know about it. Many people live by the phrase “knowledge is power” while others comfortably believe in the saying “ignorance is bliss”. According to Juan D. Carrillo and Thomas Mariotti, some people would rather be ignorant because “voluntary ignorance [can] be used as a self-control device preventing the individual from embarking in a hazardous activity which he [or she] could later regret,” (Carillo and Mariotti 1). These people believe that ignorance is truly blissful because knowing an abundant amount of information about a topic, or even a person, can be severely detrimental on the state of mind. One of these fervent believers is Daisy Buchanan, a major character in the novel The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald.…

It was a few years ago when I was young and wise, that someone my age but older stood and claimed jubilantly, "Ignorance is Bliss", the wonderfully dreadfully, perfect mistake people make. What is so blissful about not knowing, better yet, purposely not wanting to know truth? The idea that Ignorance is Bliss makes sense to most, I mean, yeah, the truth can hurt but think about it. Removing a band-aid fast is far better than doing so in a slow and agonizingly painful manner. The difference with knowing is that pain is temporary, pain is understood, pain shapes the future.…

Visualize living in a society where ignorance is looked on as strength. 1984 by George Orwell and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury both create a world where (for the higher authorities) it’s crucial that the citizens are ignorant, or they will end up rebelling against their unjust leaders. In Fahrenheit 451, Guy Montag is a firefighter who burns books for a living and starts to question his society more and more as the book progresses. Montag then starts to read books, which is ultimately illegal.…

Adam and Eve were “free to eat from any tree in the garden; but [they] must not eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil” (Genesis 2:16-17). In the beginning, they were completely fine with obeying these laws. However, just as Gene was enticed to hurt Finny, Adam and Eve were drawn to eat from the Forbidden Fruit. They were tempted by the devil in serpent form. The serpent informs Adam and Eve that God did not want them to eat the fruit because “when [they] eat from it [their] eyes will be open, and [they] will be like God, knowing good and evil” (Genesis 3:5).…

If anyone could gain extreme knowledge, even for a small period, that would open their eyes to reality, would it not be reasonable? A number of individuals have recently suggested that ignorance is bliss. It has become common today to dismiss ignorance for the fact people desire to be right while dismissing other cultures, religions, or thoughts of being wrong. Americans though, do now believe in the act of dropping out of college to build their own a company being the best method, yet this process severs their path of education but also their desire to learn. In discussions of ignorance, one controversial topic was issued from Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave”. On one hand, Plato argues ignorance is not bliss as there is more for us to see.…

Tolstoy states that ignorance, “consists in not knowing, not understanding, that life is an evil and an absurdity” (Tolstoy). He says that mainly women and young children are subject to the category of ignorance. He views these groups of people as not being capable of pondering ideas as complex as the meaning of life. They take pleasure in licking the honey and live life in a state of ignorant bliss. But Tolstoy also states that people can only stay in a state of ignorance for so long, “something will turn their attention to the dragon and the ice, and there will be an end to they're licking”…
