Flowers For Algernon Analysis

Daniel Keyes science fiction story “Flowers for Algernon” takes place in the hospital Charlie goes to take tests and the factory where he works. He thinks that he has “friends” (Joe and Frank) at work, but they are really not his friends because they make fun of him because he is not smart. So Charlie wants to be used for an experiment to get smart. And when he gets the operation he starts to get smarter slowly. And when he gets smarter Joe and Frank leave him alone. The saddest day came, because he found out Algernon died. After a few months he starts to lose his smartness and he realized that what happened to Algernon is going to happen to him. When Mrs. Kinnian was reading Charlie’s progress report, she read the part when his “friends” from the factory got him drunk and started making fun of him and then she said he got something in her eye and ran to the bathroom, when she really started to cry. This shows that his “Friends” from the factory were never his friends and they just used Charlie as a toy to make fun of him. And when he realized that they were never his friends he was ashamed of himself. This shows that friends come and go throughout your life and if makes you realize mistakes that you made and your trust that you give them.

You should always be yourself even if someone wants to change your personality. When Frank and Joe invited Charlie to a party he wasn’t being himself, he was trying to be cool and funny so he could make friends. But instead he was making a fool out of himself. This shows that, if he was himself he would be better. And that if he didn’t listened to Joe and Frank he wouldn’t of made fun of himself in front of everyone. And he wouldn’t of gotten drunk then beat up after, and lied too. This shows that if Charlie were to be himself every time and especially that day it would of been better for him and his
