The State of Florida vs. George Zimmerman A neighborhood watchman, a young man and a gun: what good could come from this mixture? The events leading to the trial were committed in 2012 after a neighborhood watchman murdered a black teenager because he was “suspicious.” In 2013 Zimmerman was acquitted when with all evidence provided in the trial he was guilty but no one truly knows why he was acquitted. The trial of State of Florida versus George Zimmerman resurfaced the true racial issues in America by, causing another racial stir, resurfacing stereotypes, and acquitting someone who is reasonably guilty. Then the State of Florida vs. Zimmerman is the perfect case; here is this 30-year-old white male who follows this 17-year-old black teenager down the road claiming he looked suspicious. Then, as stated by a teen that had been talking on the phone with Martin shortly before he was murdered, “He told me he was being followed by a “Crazy cracker.” as used to describe Zimmerman. A claim made by Zimmerman was that when Martin was walking around with his hood up is that; he “looked like trouble” (CNN). Which based on the ways American society has changed the, gang influence causes people to believe people walking around with sagged pants and hoodies on with their hood up is generally a person someone should stay away from. Then you take a look at the protest, people literally flooded the streets with packs of skittles in their hands and their hoods up saying Zimmerman was a racist and a white supremacist and that he killed Martin for being black. Everyone’s question, “Why was he acquitted?” Well, there is an answer to that, Zimmerman was acquitted because of: a lack of evidence, a lack of “living witnesses”, and because the charges were found by many lawyers to be “overkill”, information on acquittal reasons provided by CNN. Although, many people will tell you he was acquitted based on what many people call the “race factor” which basically states that Zimmerman as a white male was acquitted because he was white and Martin was a black male. To analyze the verdict and what it caused people should look at what America was like in 1950’s and 60’s where the whites were in the situation of racial stereotyping.
