Gatorade was born in the summer of 1965 at the University of Florida. It all started when the assistant coach asked the team physicians how the players could not be affected by heat or heat related illnesses. The researchers discovered that the Florida Gators players were not getting enough fluids and electrolytes, which were being lost through sweat, so they decided to make a beverage that would replace these key components. Once they made the concoction, the researchers called it “Gatorade.” The original Gatorade gives a unique formula of sodium, potassium, and essential carbohydrates to your muscles and mind; so that it will help you maintain your high level of performance when it matters most. The lab would then evolve expanding to provide testing for mostly professional athletes and new Gatorade products to develop education materials for sports health professionals all around the world. This is a huge help, because now the health professionals and coaches can teach the young athletes the correct way on nutrition and other things to keep their body in good shape. These were the only two options until 1983 when they made Fruit Punch and in 1988 they introduced the flavor Citrus Cooler. This flavor became popular, because Michael Jordan stated that it was his favorite flavor when he was at the prime of his career. From the 1970’s to the 1980’s, there was a brand of chewing gum called Gator Gum that was produced. It was first available in the original flavors lemon-lime and orange. Unfortunately, The Gatorade Gum was unavailable in 1989, since there contract expired. In the mid 1990’s, the beverages for Gatorade started to have a wider range of flavors such as, Watermelon, Cherry Rush, and Strawberry Kiwi. Then they launched the Gatorade Frost series hoping it would attract more people besides athletes. They came out with the flavors Alpine Snow, Glacier Freeze, and Riptide Rush. In 2001, Gatorade publicized the Energy Bar, which was the first food product they came out with. They wanted this bar to compete with the PowerBar and the Cliff Bar’s.
