To implement this function of patient care, today’s nurses need to view each individual as a whole: body, mind and spirit. Nurses need to acknowledge that the environment influences the individual’s health and wellbeing. Nightingale explained that the client, the nurse and the environment are in balance with each other. Nightingale emphasized that it is crucial for the nurse to manipulate the environment in order to compensate the client’s response to it …show more content…
Nightingale’s legacy of creating evidence-based practice in health care settings today is clearly evident. Nightingale was the first nursing figure to utilize research in practice. It was her persistence to not only get the science right but also to make it comprehensible to common people as well as politicians who made and administered the laws. According to Alligood (2014), Nightingale’s concepts “have increased relevance as a global society faces new issues of disease control” (p.67). The concept of healthy environment in Western hospitals continuously needs to be assessed by nurses. Nurses can then determine if modern controlled buildings meet Nightingale’s principle of good ventilation because these controlled environments protect the public from environmental hazards such as second-hand smoke and auto emissions (Alligood, …show more content…
A nursing situation that supports evidence based practice is when the nurse is caring for an individual with Hepatitis C who is an injection drug user and does not want to stop using drugs. As the nurse, I can recognize that this may be a long term goal for the patient however I can assist him by educating him on harm reduction strategies in order to prevent him from passing on the virus to others. Harm reduction is an evidence based approach and BPG through the RNAO. According to the BPG, “it aims to reduce the harmful effects of drug use on individuals and communities by reducing the transmission of blood-borne pathogens through the provision of sterile needles and other drug-using equipment without requiring individuals to quit using drugs” (p.10). Using a harm reduction approach in drug use is scientifically evident to be effective in reducing transmission of blood-borne pathogens and improving health
