By the time Nightingale was finished, nurses everywhere were given respect and nursing itself instead of being seen as a domestic service was seen as a profession and an honor. She had three important ideas that shaped nursing to make it how it is today- a nurses value, vision and voice (“Florence Nightingale’s Legacy”). “ Her strong values influence her work throughout her life (“Florence Nightingale’s Legacy”)”. Nightingale viewed nursing as keeping others alive and emphasized a nurse’s integrity. Values affect a person’s character and their development as a person. To be a nurse, one has to value every life, no matter how big or small and is willing to work through blood, sweat and tears to save a life. Society often asks nurses “why don’t you just go to school for a couple more years and become a doctor?” not realizing nurses are the ones who put in the most work. One just does not decided to be a nurse, one has to hold a passion for putting others first to keep a person alive, to make sudden decisions because someone’s life depends on it. As mentioned before, nightingale created a better nursing world not just for nurses of that time but for the future nurses everywhere. Her mission to formalize nursing caused her to establish the first scientifically based nursing school, known as Nightingale’s School of Nursing (“Florence Nightingale: Notes on Nursing”). Nightingale would never hope for nursing to go back to the dark place it came from, so she ensured a higher education for future nurses. After coming back from the Crimean War a little while after Florence set up training for midwives (Selanders, “Florence Nightingale”). Nightingale didn’t do any of these things for the acknowledgement she didn’t care about recognition. She did what she had to in order to answer Gods call. If it was not for her, nursing would not be anywhere close to what it is due to the lack of passion of others that can’t compare to Nightingales.
