Florence Nightingale stated, “Let whoever is in charge keep this simple question in her head (not, how can I always do this right thing myself, but) how can I provide for this right thing to be always done?” Even though Florence Nightingale lived over 100 years ago, her statement still rings true today. Leadership is a constant struggle to figure out how to inspire others to achieve the best outcome. Leadership not only addresses the leader but also the type of leadership style (or technique) the individual chooses to use. This type of leadership provides very limited or no guidance, direction, or feedback whatsoever. Communication is very limited and leaders are unwilling or unable to make decisions (Cherry & Jacob, 2011, p. 340). When comparing laissez-fare leadership against authoritative leadership they are almost opposite extremes. Mature followers can thrive under laissez-fair leadership, as they need very little guidance (Giltinane, 2013, p. 36). This type of leadership may actually improve job satisfaction because the experienced nurse is effectively his or her own boss. Conversely, the laissez-fare style would be detrimental to an inexperienced or new nurse who would need much guidance to successfully do his or her job. Taken to an extreme this style may be perceived as no leadership. The lack of oversight could leave an inexperienced nurse floundering to make the right decisions; possibly causing a delay or decrease in the quality of patient care, potentially endangering lives. Leaders must also have a clear understanding of an organization 's vision and the ability and willingness to help others work towards that vision (Gaiter, 2013, p. 36). A leader’s goal should be to produce the best performance from others to “get the right thing done”. A leader must decide which of the three leadership styles: authoritative, laissez-fair and participative will be effective (or detrimental) to the organization. It is up to the leader to choose which style will work best with his or her people during a particular situation or task. Leadership is knowing not only whom you are leading, but also choosing the best leadership style to lead with (Cherry & Jacob, 2011, p. 340). In turn this will allow each member of the team to reach his or her fullest potential while providing the greatest benefit to the organization as a
