The English nurse Florence Nightingale was born May 12, 1820 in Italy. Florence was named after the city she was born in. Her parents were very wealthy. Her father had an estate and her mother came from a family of stock merchants. She was a very smart young lady and was excellent in mathematics. At a very young age she could write in five different languages. She was never satisfied with being at home and what her parents wanted for her (Selanders).

She seemed to be very comfortable with her religion. She remained in the church of England her whole life. She believed that caring for the suffering and love for others was a part of her religion and what she believed in. Her loyalty to Christ was very strong. Nightingale was real big on discrimination against Christians and non-Christian religions. She believed religion helped provide people with Courage in their day to day life or through whatever they were going through at the moment. Her achievements were so big that they all play an important role in today’s society. Nursing is a well-respected field. Back in the nineteen hundreds it was something that the wealthy did not do and people did not give the ones who did nurse the respect they needed. Nurses in the nineteen hundreds were risking their life because there was no sanitizing and cleaning until Florence came a long and introduced it. People that are sick cannot get well in an environment where there is filth and not an inch of sanitizing. Florence Nightingale is the reason why hospitals today have rule and regulations on being a clean and safe environment. Sanitizing and washing your hands is very important.
