Nightingales work is recognized all over the world still today. She received was the Order of Merit in 1907 and in 1908 she was awarded the Freedom of the City of London. She had already received the German order of the Cross of Merit and the French gold medal of Secours aux Blessés Militaires. Receiving this award and having one named after her was a very delightful pleasure. Nightingale 's official title from that point on was ‘Superintendent of the Female Nurses in the Hospitals in the East’; but she came to be known generally as ‘The Lady-in-Chief.’ Nightingale was and is appreciated to the point that she was given this title so everyone would know exactly how good she really is at nursing.
