Flopsy Bunnies In Margaret Edson's W. T

In Margaret Edson’s “W;t,” it mentions the stories of the Flopsy Bunnies. This was a child’s tale about the life of a family of bunnies. It explains what the term soporific means and how it relates to the condition of Vivian in the play “W;t.” Vivian Bearing was the main character in “W;t.” She was a professor at a university in England and she taught Metaphysical poetry which played a large role in the development of this character. She was a very bright girl as a student and she was always studying instead of hanging out with friends. She was more of a loner because she did not like socializing with other people. It was difficult for her to make friends. She first took a class on metaphysical poetry with her professor E.M. Ashford which is where she found her love for it. Vivian had taken a liking to Professor Ashford because she was the one tough professor that challenged her. Vivian had to speak with her in order to figure why she wasn’t doing well in her class. During her whole cycle of cancer, she was seen as a research project to gain new data for her type of cancer. She kept going through her whole treatment and the doctors were impressed by how long she lasted. She had stage four ovarian cancer and she was on her last leg to survive.
While she went through treatments, she had flashbacks of her childhood. This is when “The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies” became important. When her father was still alive, she would read to him and this story had a very interesting tie to Vivian. She came across the word soporific and didn’t know what it meant. Her father told her to sound it out and then he would tell her. It meant to make someone sleepy, which was the effect of the lettuce on the bunnies. She loved learning this word and it came back to her while she awaited
