Brunelleschi’s Dome The discovery I decided to research was about Filippo Brunelleschi and his famous dome. His discovery began in the early 1400’s, when the leaders of the town—Florence—decided that it was time to replace the roof on the cathedral. For centuries, the hole had been there, and bad weather was beginning to ruin parts of the exposed cathedral. So, they decided to hold a bit of a competition among all the artisans of Florence, offering a prize of 200 gold florins, for the best design that really captured the attention of the leaders.…

Brunelleschi's design of the dome for Florence's cathedral A church without a roof, seems to be ample motivation to have one installed. However, the church that had begun in 1296 still had no roof over the grandest part in 1418. The problem? How to build a dome 180’ in the air, 150’ across, on top of an octagonal building.…

It is hard to imagine the engineering feat orchestrated by Filippo Brunelleschi on the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral in the early 1400’s. Brunelleschi seemed destined in his early years for some great architectural work. He was described as a young genius of sorts who in his youth developed his skill as an artist and expert working in metals and wood. He spent much of his time studying the engineering proficiency of ancient architects and their works.…

I found Brunelleschi's design of the dome for Florence's cathedral to be a fascinating topic on scientific discovery. I also chose this topic because several years ago I watched a documentary that showed the construction of a one-fifth scale model of Brunelleschi’s dome and the possible construction methods that he may have used. The story begins in Florence, Italy in the year 1296 when the fathers of the city had decided to build a church to “showcase the status of Florence as one of Europe’s economic and cultural capitals, grown rich on high finance and the wool and silk trades. It was later decided that the structure’s crowning glory would be the largest cupola on Earth, ensuring the church would be “more useful and beautiful, more powerful and honorable” than any other ever built, as the grandees of Florence decreed.…

I chose to write about Brunelleschi’s dome design for the Florence cathedral. Originally, the Florence Cathedral had a huge space at the top that was empty, leaving the interior of the monument susceptible to weather damage from rain, snow, sunlight, etc. In order to make one of the city’s most prideful landmarks more efficient. Considering how a dome to this scale had never been successfully constructed, numerous questions plagued the leaders of Florence, such as how enough supplies could be found, could any design match the structure of the Cathedral, and can a dome to this scale even be long-standing? Eventually, an architect emerged who claimed to have the solution.…

Medieval Church: Gothic Cathedral The architecture of the medieval Gothic cathedrals is one of the greatest glories of European culture. Since the twelfth century, Gothic art and literature in Europe had become very popular, and were soon brought to perfection in the thirteenth century. The first Gothic cathedral was the abbey of Saint-Denis (built around 1140 and 1150 ce); it was inspired by the famous Abbot Suger. This cathedral was burned down twice and without the reconstruction of it, Notre Dame, and all the cathedrals in the future would not have been established the way they were. Saint-Denis started a revolution of cathedrals in the Gothic style.…

Brunelleschi was hired by the Medici family to help rebuild the dome that they had failed to build. He intensely studied the Pantheon ( the world’s biggest dome before the Medici’s dome ) for inspiration on how to build the dome and eventually found the secret to building this dome. He rebuilt the shattered dome using his knowledge from the Pantheon and brought back the glory of the Medici family and in return, gaining their support. However unlike Galileo, Brunelleschi didn’t challenge dogma, he challenged beliefs. He challenged the belief that he wouldn’t be able to build the world's biggest dome.…
