Alternative Working Schedules: Flexible or Compressed
There are many great benefits for flexible and alternative working schedules not only for the employee and their family, but also benefit the employers. Employer’s and employees working together to find flexibility in working schedules can influence a positive work environment as well. In contrast, employees working irregular schedules can have a negative impact on work performance and employee/family relationship. Focusing on employee, their happiness, and a flexible work scheduling has a major impact on the staff and influences positive team behavior.

There are five types of flexible work schedules such as maxiflex, variable week, variable day, gliding day, and flexi-tour. As explained in the article Alternative Work Schedules (AWS) - OHRM (n.d.), maxiflex is the most flexible schedule which works less than ten workdays per the biweekly schedule. Variable week focuses on completing the eighty required hours in the biweekly schedule no matter how many days or hours (eg. can complete in one week if chosen). A variable day is described as completing forty hours per week with alternating days and times that are flexible to the employee. The gliding schedule focuses on arrival and departure times, which add up as long as you are at the work place. Lastly, the flexi tour is similar to the gliding schedule of eight hours per day, five days a week but can change when the opportunity arises. Having these types of flexible scheduling for employees will help with adjusting work with life events, but does not mean the employee can come and go as they please.
