Flexer Essay

I find the concept of a flexer in team roles to be the most important concepts in Module 3. The realm of Air Force Cyberspace Operations heavily relies on teams of cybersecurity experts who are tasked with defense of systems vital to the survival of our nation. At first sight, leading a team consisting of smart members would seem like a walk in the park. For example, a team might consist of several Creators and no Advancer, which causes all the ideas to be rejected by a Refiner. These teams typically fall behind in the generation, refinement, and implementation of the appropriate solution, due to inherent inability to follow through the “Z process”. The best way to address these issues is to have a team member to assume the role of a flexer. In my personal experience, a good Team Leader or the most experienced team members typically assume the role of flexer in a team.
Becoming a flexer is very much like acquiring a super power. They are able to recognize the weaknesses of the team and substitute for missing team roles. Flexers are team members who has a vision for the team and able to see the big picture by capitalizing on each of the team roles present in the team. I will apply the Flexer concept to help my team define an optimal solution for issues identified with our equipment, tools, training, and mission preparations. By stepping into the Flexer role, I will also be able to establish collaborative relationships with peers. Usually, they are not keen having their systems and methodologies put under a microscope of cybersecurity. However, my peers will see more effective and efficient accomplishment of tasks assigned to the flight.
