Today’s society is focused on flaws. Most people focus on their own flaws and flaws of other people. However, a new movement has started that wants to diminish these wrong ideas of focusing on anybody’s flaws. These wrong ideas or, so called flaws, include the praise of unrealistic appearances, superiority of a group of people, and skewed priorities in today's society. The movement is against all sexism, racism, and some materialism. But, the movement is still focusing on the bad things too. For example, you often hear people complaining about photoshopped models, or complaining that she didn’t get the job because of her gender, or complaining that his little sister prioritizes her iPad over playing outside. But, how often do you hear someone doing something about it? While yes, education and getting your word out is a big part of stopping these ideas we must put the new ideas into action. I am here to tell you that there are people making a big impact and more people need to stop complaining and join the impact movement. Photoshop was a big trend for big magazines like Vogue and Ralph Lauren from about 2007-2012, when being stick thin with perfect skin was considered average. Now? They don’t. Its simple and why? …show more content…
At the same time however, people that are concerned also are the ones making a difference, the smallest thing can be the biggest in a movement. According to Maria deSouza, a third-year student at Pembleton, and the President of the students for Equality Everywhere (SEE), “The societal problem is lookism. For decades, people have been willing to talk about racism and sexism, but they’re still reluctant to talk about lookism” (282). Lookism is known as being prejudice against unattractive people. Lookism is something that is not taught, it is naturally acquired and due to society, it is constantly reinforced through many sources such as social media, fashion and television. Our society has become increasingly superficial and materialistic; it is becoming less about who you are and more about what you have.…

Kate Murphy supports Christine Rosen’s argument on the fact that people manipulate a photo to support the view that they want to be displayed. The author says,“With body-slimming, skin-smoothing and age-defying filters and apps , people can make themselves look better than their true selves”(Murphy). People can be so unhappy with themselves that they are willing to go buy these apps or even go to the extreme by getting plastic surgery, just show the world a version of them that won’t be the truth. This helps enrich Rosen’s point because it shows that people are willing to change not only themselves, but the people they love with photoshop because they are so obsessed with how one should look, that we stop caring about the consequences.…

Since January 1st of last year, 1,502 people were shot and killed by a police officer on duty in America. Of those deaths, 381 were African American. Although that number doesn’t seem very large at first glance, the African American population only makes up 13% of the overall U.S population, making this statistic quite alarming (Lowery, 2016). Police brutality towards African American’s has been a prevalent issue in recent years, which in-turn has created a movement referred to as Black Lives Matter. The message behind Black Lives Matter is that every person deserves equal rights and treatment, no matter their skin color or race.…

I believe that the authors first solution should be to help others become educated about the problems and then once people become educated then it would be possible for most people to be able to unite and stand up against these institutions. Furthermore, the author argues that small gestures do not really lead anywhere because they are just so small that they have little to no effect. The author states “personal change does not equal social change,” (3). Although this may seem trivial, it is infact crucial because I believe…

When the founding fathers of America risked their lives to build the United States they knew that having free speech is key to a democracy that reigns in a world full of controversy. As much as we would like to think we have progressed there are still cringe worthy events that happen every single day. Dealing with controversy that arises has two solutions. Discussion and debate or running away and ignoring the issue. While debates can lead to offensive remarks that are as hideous as the topic of discussion at least the issue is brought to the general public’s focus where it can be worked out through a diverse society that has a broad range of different experiences and situations.…

To me this quote means that as human beings become increasingly aware of the diversity that exists throughout the globe and within our own country, we begin to acknowledge and respect one another, and through this we are one step closer in achieving peace within our country and our world. For starters, I came from a country which failed time and time again to see and understand this concept Rigoberta Menchú so intricately devised into words. Mexico, in all of its natural beauty and ancient civilizations to soak up; is now in deep social and economic peril. Luckily, my mother was sufficiently educated to catch the early warning signs and knew that she wanted a better life for her and me, somewhere where we could have a second chance at life.…

They must be able to know when their rights are being violated, when they are being abused, when they abuse someone else's, and how they can be protected.…
