In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, theocracy proved to be a major downfall in Salem as a result of how it affected the way trials were run, how the laws were arranged and enforced, and how the accused were dealt with.
The trials in Salem undoubtedly revolved around God, as shown throughout the court sessions. However, the court was blind to the sins that were committed. In one instance, Francis Nurse said, "The girls, sir, the girls are all frauds... They are all deceiving you" (Miller 146). Danforth eventually firmly replied, saying "Do you know, Mr. Proctor, that the entire contention of the state in these trials is that the voice of Heaven is speaking through the children?"
