In 1954, The Lord of the Flies became published and revealed the many flaws of the modern society. A group of boys crash-landed on an island and created a society in order to survive the ordeal. William Golding, the author, used each of the boys to represent some aspect of society in the world, which also showed the various flaws in society. Golding used the world around him as the inspiration behind The Lord of the Flies, so it would come as no surprise that the time period that Golding lived in influenced his book. One lens to look at literature through, called New Historicism, states that a literary work should be considered a product of the time, place, and historical circumstances of the time period rather than as an isolated work of art
