The Intersection of Sexuality and White Privilege True feminism teaches us that women experience multiple oppressions and privileges that show the unique struggles faced all over the world. Feminism is not one universal movement that applies to every woman. In the words of Barbra Smith in her essay Making Face, Making Soul (1990), she writes, Feminism is a political theory and practice that struggles to free all women: women of colour, working-class women, poor women, disabled women, lesbians, old women – as well as white, economically privileged, heterosexual women. (p. 25) Smith is implying that all our issues are connected and not separate, even though confronted in different degrees.…

A common question among women who strive to become feminist is; does one have to be a lesbian to be a feminist? This is the question that Marilyn Frye seeks to answer in her essay “Willful Virgin or Do you have to be a lesbian to be a Feminist." In this essay, I will argue why I believe Frye's theory is plausible and important to the feminist movement. However, I will raise an objection that I do find to be problematic in her paper. Nonetheless, Frye's theory should still not be rejected due to that one flaw.…

Feminism is “the advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men.” In other words, any male or female who believes that men and women are equal and should be treated as equals is a feminist. By using the definition of feminism a logical conclusion can be made that being pro-woman does not mean you are anti-man. Being a feminist means you advocate for the rights of women and men to reach the goal of equality regardless of your gender. Beyonce Knowles sparked controversy with the release of her self-titled album as it features a song that focuses on feminism, “***Flawless”. The song includes a section of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's TED Talk, “We Should All Be Feminists”, in which she talks about the differences in the social structure of a woman's and a man's life. While men are taught they can do or be anything, women must make choices in life “always keeping in mind that marriage is the most important”. Beyonce's mention of feminism throughout the album caused discussion around the issues of gender equality but unfortunately the topic is not treated as seriously as it used to be. While women have gained rights over the last century that has made them more equal to men, invisible restrains in both the workplace and in everyday life still limit women from reaching complete equality.…
