Flavius Josephus: The Claims Of The Bible Today

Decent Essays
The universal integrity of biblical writings have established rational justification of what we read in the Bible today. The claims of the Bible have been observed and verified to be true. It is true that some miracles in the Bible are recorded outside of scripture, and by people who were not sympathetic to Christianity.
The writings of Flavius Josephus also confirm the Bible in numerous detail. He was a Jew who turned his devotion away from Jerusalem to Rome. Between AD 66-93, he wrote significantly about Jewish history. His writings included details on King Herod, John, the Baptist, James, the brother of Jesus, and Jesus Himself. Josephus shows knowledge of miracles or miraculous claims in Testimonium Flavianum.

In Under the Feet of Jesus, on page 151, Viramontes writes, “You talk and talk and talk to them and they ignore you. But you pick up a crowbar and break the pictures of their children, and all of a sudden they listen real fast.” By explicit consent, author enforces her view on change and the powerless through word choice, direct meaning, and sentence structures. With these lines, Viramontes relays to the reader the idea that the more a voice is ignored the greater chance that the seemingly voiceless will take matters into their own hands.…

In this passage, Martin Luther explains that there is “a twofold knowledge of God, general and particular.” General knowledge of God means knowing that God exists and that type of knowledge is accessible to everyone. On the other hand, particular knowledge means knowing what the God’s will is for you and that is accessible to Christians only. According to Luther, the only way to particular knowledge is the Bible. Similarly, Felker-Jones refers to these two types of knowledge as general and special revelation.…

“What happened to king Joseph,” Benjamin asked? “This is all your fault you allowed evil to take control of your puny little mind giving the dark one the chance to act out those dark fantasies sealed away in the back of your head,”queen Titania screamed at the top of her lungs! “How did the dark one take control I locked him away in the farthest corners of my mind so I could prevent him from hurting anyone else?” “The dark one escaped because you are a weak little simpleton who must die!.” “When you were infected with a centuries old evil I told my husband to give you a chance, and because I didn't allow Joseph to strike you down you still live while his corpse lies in my arms!”…

David Hume is an enlightenment philosopher of the 18th century. In general, Hume says that miracles are something that defy the laws of nature and have never, or should never, occur. He does not claim that miracles never occurred, but concludes that it is not rational to belief them. Most miracles are religion based because God would be the only one with the power to perform them. Hume says that everyone should be skeptical of miracles, and has two main arguments for why he says that; a priori and a posterior.…

During the Roman Empire, Jews and Christians were treated indifferently compared to polytheists. During the Great Revolt (66-70 CE), Rome invaded Judea and destroyed the Second Temple in 70 CE. In "Sources for the Cultures of the West" Document 7.1, Josephus explains how Jews were treated during the Roman invasion of Jerusalem. "The number of corpses that lay in piles everywhere was indeed a horrible sight... The number of Jews who died of famine in the city was prodigious, their sufferings unspeakable.…

Through source criticism it is clear that there are inconsistencies with the full belief in the accuracy of text, especially reflecting upon how old these sources are and how ‘credible’ they are. Through the credibility of text, understanding the time period in which the accounts in scripture are written and the historical accuracy of these encounters proves challenging (Morreall, 2012). A majority of encounters were written after they physically took place, a prime example of this is the Resurrection of Jesus: it became a significant important part of Christian doctrines, specifically the Nicene Creed (Morreall, 2012). Belief in religion causes people to have a lack of trust in science, making them hold on to religious practices in spite…

However, there are many weaknesses of Protestantism. Restoring the authority back to scripture led more and more theologians and scholars to have a “rigor scholasticus” (70) attitude to scripture. This led them to identify faults with certain texts in the Bible, a practice also known as literary criticism. Although learning the historical background of a text gave considerable insight, it also led many to ponder the factuality of the miracle stories.…

Throughout his complete works, Josephus identifies three main sects of Judaism that were present within his lifetime: the Pharisees, the Sadducees, and the Essenes. Throughout his different works he offers many descriptions of these different sects. He describes the Pharisees in the most detail, likely because he asserts that the Pharisees drew much support from the common man and that he himself was once a Pharisee (Antiquities 13.10.5). It is useful to help understand these three sects by considering the form of government most closely related to their beliefs.…

Biblical Creation as a Worldview Should Biblical Creationism be presented parallel with evolution as a valid explanation of the origin of the universe? The secular system is accepting evolution as fact, when evolution is really a worldview in which one sees the facts. The argument can then be made that if one must exert faith to believe evolution, then Biblical Creationism should not be disqualified as an equal explanation. National evangelist and former atheist Kirk Cameron (2004) writes, “Evolution is a religion that is believed by men and women… I was one of them until I was willing to investigate the facts” (p. 418).…

On the contrary, it is a virtually universal characteristic of human history. Defenders of slavery argued that slavery had existed throughout history and was the natural state of mankind. INTRODUCTION God is not the author of confusion, the Bible is clear in revealing not only the reality of miraculous events in the Book of Acts but also their purpose. One of the main purposes of the miracles in the Book of Acts was to create a platform for preaching and evangelism for the Apostles. The miracles in the book of Acts were not for the direct benefit of those performing the miracles or for material purposes. They were for the purpose of authenticating the message about Jesus. GENUINE MIRACLES Miracles are seals of a divine mission.…

Instead the Bible should be interpreted as an expression of the ideas that God wanted to be portrayed, sometimes in non-factual ways. Living in our modern day society we need to understand that these thoughts were better displayed through stories than they would have been through factual reports. Winter also says that some parts of the more profound parts of the Bible would lose their power if they were based upon observable facts, such as the story of creation. (29-37) Believing in the supernatural helps us to cope with our everyday lives. By doing so it makes it so that we can focus our concerns on other questions that we can derive scientific answers from.…
