Flatworm Lab Report

During this lab flatworms and earthworms anatomy and physiology were examined. Unfortunately as the experiment continued with the bring home flatworm, it died in my house as it was too warm in my room and on the shaded part of my desk. The planetarium was cut up in two segments in order to see whether the anterior or posterior side of the flatworm would regenerate the fastest. My hypothesis was as stated, if the flatworm was cut above the pharynx in the branched gastrovascular cavity (before the mouth) then the planarian will regenerate its head faster than regenerating a whole body. As the experiment progressed the results were quite interesting.
To begin, the initial day looked as if my flatworm was dead since it had its head dismembered

Then on the second day, it is noticeable that there was a third flatworm forming. This is because the posterior end of the worm contains reproductive parts that birthed this new flatworm. The planarians are a hermaphrodite organism that has both male and female reproductive organs. As for day two, it is visible to see part of the head regrowing on the posterior end of the flatworm while the body of the anterior end of the flatworm is regrowing. On the third day, there is no visible difference from day two other than the third planetarium is growing. On the following day, it is observed that the anterior end’s body is regrowing while the head of the posterior end is still forming while it seems it is regenerating it faster than the body of the anitor end. And the third flatworm is forming as well. On the final day of observation, the flatworm’s posterior head had successfully regenerated its head and the anterior end had regrown a bigger portion of it’s body however it did not regrow enough to meet its original size. The third planarian has grown to the size of the posterior end, and has a full head and

The objective of the Isopods Lab was to figure out if the Pillbugs favored the wet environment or a dry environment. After reading the pre-lab report on Pillbugs, my hypothesis was that “If water is added to an Isopods environment, then the isopods will favor the wet environment.” By using two groups of Isopods, one group was put into a dry environment and the other had one drop of water into their dish. After ten minutes of observing the Isopods, the results showed that the Pill Bugs prefer the wet environment more. As time went on, the bugs in the wet environment survived longer than the Isopod in the dry environment.…

Discussion: 1. Compare the ratio of the lengths of the intestine in earthworms, frogs, pigs, and humans. What significance do the lengths have with respect to the organism? Based on dissection, it was noted that the length of the intestine in earthworms, frogs, and humans all vary in sizes. The intestine of the earthworm is about two-thirds of the worm 's body length.…

Benjamin Harouni Sigurdsen BISC 120 Lab November 2014 Modeling the regeneration of Gugesia dorotocephala: The window into human regeneration Introduction: The field of regenerative medicine aspires to control the ability to regulate the growth of organs and appendages. In order to control the growth and help those who suffer from injuries, defects and degenerative diseases, scientists must learn about the natural molecular tools that animals use to repair damage to their bodies. The medical capabilities of treating patients to regrow limbs or completely regenerate neurons are still a distant goal.…

Within an article called “They Might Be Gross, But Intestinal Worms Can Actually Be Good For You” by Dr. William Parker of Duke University, a new perspective on the potential uses of intestinal worms, or helminths, as they are referred to, is given to readers. He argues that these creatures can actually be beneficial to the human health, along with the health of many other animals. Dr. Parker constructs support for his argument by using ethical appeal, logical appeal, and primary resources throughout the document. Parker continuously reinforces his argument by using ethical appeal in the article. Although there are many examples of its usage, one prominent use is when he stated, “(In) my lab, working with a Duke University colleague…” (Parker).…

The primary bit of this lab, we were given the chance to essentially analyze worms and turn out to be more acquainted with the terms of life structures concerning the body areas and positions. The worm analyzation concentrated for the most part on the sexual multiplication part of worms, likely in light of the fact that it is not fundamentally the same as human proliferation. I learned in this lab that worms are not arranged as male or female since a few worms are considered bisexuals and have sexual proliferation organs of both genders. Amid this lab I recognized diverse structures of the worm and their physiological functions. In the second part of the analysis, I got to practically dismember a fetal pig.…

    Sow Bug Experiment Essay

We discovered that the sow bugs had an overall negative reaction towards this environment. We inferred this as we watched and studied the behavior of sow bugs. We knew they had a negative reaction towards the damp environment when they went towards the piece of paper towel and rearing back and going back towards the control or to the dry side. The trend that we saw in the bugs with no reaction was that they were smaller in size. All they wanted to do was remain in the middle of the container, vs. the larger worms who were more active.…

Introduction Planaria are a type of flatworms that possess a mammalian nervous system and the ability to regenerate skin cells. The flatworms are used in a variety of experiments, which include chemical responses and experiments upon the regeneration process. When combined with addictive drugs and chemicals, such as cocaine and ethanol, the planaria display paroxysms, motor effects, and c shaped movements (Tallarida et al 2014). The planaria demonstrate their applicability of their systems in multi-drug interactions, and they display visible results in different drug combinations. (Tallarida et all 20014).…

Discussion: After undergoing the regeneration process Planaria had varying responses. This study concluded that the majority of planaria retain the learning process after regeneration, this statement is especially relevant in the head regenerated planaria. Before the experiment, a hypothesis was made that the head end would retain the classical conditioning and the tail end would not.…
