Flashbacks In Rashmi Jain's Dance Like A Man

The first flashback is of Hasmukh Mehta in which he tells the audience about his upbringing and how he has been influnced by it. It gives an insight as to why he is so dominating in nature and wants everyone to obey him. The second flashback is of Kiran, who tells the Mehta family about her relationship with Hasmukh and her drunkard husband.
Kiran tells Sonal about the different dimension of their relationship and how Hasmukh has been inconsiderate to the feelings of the people around him. She recollects her past life when her father always came drunk and beat up his wife and harassed his family. She feels that men who try to impose their will upon others are weak men in the society, who thrive on their false sense of strength.

Dattani through Dan brilliantly uses the flashback technique; there is proper blending of past and present. . . . Dan is . . . . suffering from guilt consciousness and is expiating in his own way” (5485). The play suddenly takes the shape of flashback and action suddenly moves back towards Mumbai where Dan and Tara havespent their childhood lives. The scene is archetypical, traditional and patriarchal.
“It is Baa’s character which is most interesting and revealing, for in a series of flashbacks is revealed her tragic past of having been married to a dominating and violent man who had not only prevented her from singing in public, but also used to beat her up regularly and ill-treat her sons” (Rajaraman 38).
The flashback technique highlights the past of Hardika who marries Ramnik Gandhi’s father. She is called Daksha in Final Solutions. The whole play comprises of Hardika’s flashback of the past regarding partition,the succeeding communal riots and disharmony,the hatred,prejudice and religious bigotry prevailing between Hindus and Muslims and the personal experiences of the characters of the
