Flashback Devices In Thornton Wilder's Our Town

I believe that Thornton Wilder's manipulation of time and use of flashbacks in Our Town was very effective. It's almost as if there are flashback inside a flashback. The events of the play happened anywhere from 1900 to 1913, while the play was performed in 1938. So the whole play is technically a flashback. However, leaving that twisted statement behind, there were two major flashback scenes in the play that had the most significance in time manipulation.

The first flashback starts shortly after Act II, “Love and Marriage”, begins. We witness the beginning of George and Emily's love. The flashback takes us back to when they were in highschool and when they first fell in love and created the courtship they have now. This is a perfect

Hidden Past Have you noticed there are a lot of violent people in the world? Have you ever wondered if they were born naturally like that of if something had happened to them to change their behavior? I believe that for someone to be violent, they would have had to have a traumatizing past. In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, Abigail was what seemed to be a violent, compulsive liar. She was heartless towards everyone besides John Proctor.…

The physical and social setting of the villages of year of wonders and the Crucible present a support to the events that occur in both texts. Due to the physical location of the villages, the communities of Salem and Eyam are both isolated. Anna describes her village as “far from any important road”, while Arthur Miller describes Salem as being “at the edge of the wilderness.” Minimalized contact where the Indian tribes lived in the ‘virgin forest’ was seen as the ‘devil’s last paradise,’ in Salem, and the outside villages of Eyam are seen as unnecessary and dangerous, with ‘no need to journey that far’ where characters such as Brady and Maggie experienced violence. Both villages have an enclosed community run by Christian principles and close…

Hysteria is a state in which a person's emotions, specially fear, are so strong that a person may behave in an uncontrolled way. In this image, it clearly portrays the meaning of hysteria. Based on my understanding about the image, the woman is being accused of something she didn't do. In the play "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller, the people in the small town of Salem abruptly accused their own neighbors of practicing witchcraft and devil-worship. As this was happening, this once small town falls into mass hysteria.…

I found the use of dramatic lighting to play the largest role in the ghost scenes where inflicting fear was intended. In singular, flashing fluorescent colors of white and green gave great detail. The sound designer used simulated reality to portray realistic sounds in the play as man-made, and not technological. This made the play feel legitimate, and less like a performance, as if I was observing it in the real world. The set, however, was the most enticing of all the visual effects.…

Arcadia, a play by Tom Stoppard, examines an English estate in two different time periods and discusses the relevance of the estate’s history. The audience travels back and forth in time as the present day characters learn about the lives of those who lived almost two centuries before them. While costumes, actors, and syntax styles make time travel evident to the audience, the set does not shift at all. Furthermore, all props that are used on stage remain there, whether they be a quill pen or a coffee mug. One prop in particular, a tortoise, is used throughout both worlds.…
