There were many different explanations of the flapper phenomenon. Some say that it's due to the fact that one-quarter to one-third of urban woman workers live alone, free from the watchful eyes of their parents so they can technically do whatever they please without receiving discipline. Other say that it's because of WWI and prohibition. Men would go off to war and women began to work outside of their home. This caused them to dress lighter in clothes, which they found out as extremely convenient. More Americans lived in the cities than in villages or on farms. Boost in mechanization increased productivity greatly.Women began to live alone and act more freely, dates were happening more frequently than normal. As factories and shops began to mechanize, work times decreased significantly and wages rose by 25 percent. Because of this, Americans had more money and time to spend on all kinds of public amusements. By 1929, American families spent 20% of their household earnings on items such as phonographs, factory-made furniture, radios, electric appliances, automobiles, and entertainment. Even if they couldn't afford what they wanted, they would borrow it. This definitely relates to us today. Women and men are able to live alone, dates are pretty much a permanent stamp on society, time and money are common, and it's a lot easier to look and buy things you want.
