Flappers from the early 20th century were a part of the 19th Amendment and were a key milestone in women’s rights. They helped shape the path for women’s rights by making bold statements that went against gender norms. If we look at the who, what, when, where, and why involved in this movement, we will better understand why they are considered such an important, crucial part of women’s history. This was a time of a cultural pivot, changing social norms involving race, sex, and societal roles. Clearing out the old ways, it provided space for new ideas and ideologies to shape a more inclusive world. Where did the flapper movement take place? Flapper fashion ventured and occurred way outside, as well as inside, the United States. While we are taught about this from an American perspective, this movement has a global impact. Although, the most popular flapper stories come from Chicago, Paris, New York, etc. But it was not just these women. Women all over the world were tired of injustice and wanted freedom just as much as anyone. Hillary Clinton once said, “Human rights are women's rights, and women's rights are human rights.” All of the strong and powerful women who aspired to make a difference all worked together to prove this, and their efforts will forever live on through the people who are still to this day continuously making a difference in the world for women's rights.
