Without understanding the literary mechanics of a story, the underlying causes cannot be uncovered. Literary devices such as foreshadowing, symbolism, and irony are critical in understanding the roots of any story. These three devices are best suited to represent an important message that O’Connor intended to convey through her writing. Flannery O’Connor’s writing contains many subtle messages that are only unlocked through close study of the devices in her stories. The short story “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by O’Connor exemplifies the use of these three devices, and uses each element to not only contribute to the main theme, but also to bring small, individual ideas to the peripheral of the story. While foreshadowing, irony, and symbolism each work the story from different directions, each device ties into the idea that pride comes before the fall. O’Connor’s stories are grim and violent, and the use of foreshadowing helps to build a unique aura around “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” As the story leads up to the climax, O’Connor inserted several hints as to the eventual outcome of the family’s trip. Foreshadowing helps to connect the story and subtly introduces future events. Multiple references to The Misfit in the early part of “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” introduces a threat to an otherwise unremarkable family vacation. While the story could exist without foreshadowing, the events in the story would not have as much significance until the story reaches its climax. Subtle foreshadowing builds tension and encourages comprehension throughout the story. Flannery O’Connor and her mother had a stereotypical mother/daughter teenage relationship. It’s easy to picture in our minds; the mom yelling at the daughter, telling her what she needs to do better, the daughter snarling back with an “I hate you.” While this may be a dramatization of their relationship, O’Connor’s relationship with her mother is embodied in her characters in all of her works. In the story, “A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” the characters of the Misfit and the grandmother portray O’Connor’s relationship with her mother and their conflicting personalities and values associated with family and O’Connor’s writing styles. Flannery O’Connor’s short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is a story of hypocrisy and irony. O’Connor’s tale of twisted morals and fleeting grasps at old standards takes a family from an innocent trip to Florida to an impending doom laid out before them by the narrator in the first paragraph. The fill of the story is one based on a grandmother’s traditional ways and the conflicting norms of their modern day society. A dying woman’s last attempt at life initially seems valiant, but the 1955 tale brings to light the error in her entire belief system and the proper foundation The Misfit has built his steadfastly on (SparkNotes). The tale brings to light a remorseless view of the world from two different eyes, a hypocritical grandmother and a…

The hate and bitterness of his “snarl” is the final implication as to how the Misfit feels about religion (O’Connor 645). Bellamy insists that the reason for the devilish message in the Misfit’s speech is due to his mission to play to role of the Anti-Christ. Bellamy asserts that, “The central message of the Misfit’s sermon, for a sermon is what his remarks amount to, is a familiar one in Flannery O’Connor’s fiction; there is no middle ground between absolute belief in Christ’s messianic fiction and a belief that like is nasty, brutish, and short,” (200). Katherine Feeley notes that the Misfit “embodies all reason and no faith,” which is the opposite of the faith-based personality of the grandmother (202). As Madison Jones remarks, the Misfit “may be haunted, at times tormented, by vision of Christ raising the dead, but he cannot believe it: he was not there.…

Flannery O’Connor’s penchant for the Southern grotesque plays out clearly in her short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find”. This narrative, featuring a grandmother who is killed by escaped convicts succeeds largely due to the interplay among its separate narrative parts. By combining a discriminate morality, a “holier than thou” attitude, and the delusion of grace in the territory of the devil O’Connor is able to highlight a universal and timeless theme found throughout her works: A smug and sanctimonious mindset will bring about punitive measures, however not without a chance of redemption. The protagonist of the story (the grandmother) showed a sense of smugness and moral superiority to her own family in the very first paragraph.…
