Flags Of Our Fathers Film Analysis

Flags of Our Fathers, directed by Clint Eastwood, is a film that is successful in portraying both a Native American and white soldiers as humans. Not only was Ira Hayes, a Pima Native American, one of the main characters, he was also a character with as much depth and humanity as his white counterparts. Although there are several moments of racial dialogues towards Ira from his superiors, it seems as though director Clint Eastwood is pointing to these scenes as flawed instead of simply leaving them as they are. Despite the heavy racist comments sprinkled throughout the film, the portrayal of Native Americans is progressive through the fact that they are depicted as humans, as they should have been before in films.
One of the main reasons it seems as though Eastwood chose to include scenes with racist comments is because

Ira is given just as much, if not more, time to develop his character in a realistic way. All of the soldiers are forever changed by the war, and they are brought together because of the horrors that they have faced in battle despite their ethnic backgrounds. It is the citizens of America upon the soldiers’ return who perpetuate racialized stereotypes against Ira, even when they view him as a hero, despite the fact that a few of Ira’s fellow soldiers treated him the same way before they fought together. Ebert also explains how Ira is someone “who America wanted to be a hero, but not an American.” Even though each of the soldiers who returned treat Ira with respect, the American people in general cannot bring themselves to do so despite the fact that has gone through the same things as his fellow

These examples show how the films are trying to upset the belief that Native Americans were savages that were still in the stone age. Instead, they wore the same clothes, the same weapons, ate the same food, and endured the same conditions as the whites. Not only this, but the films also accurately depict the critically important role Native Americans played in the war, one that if they did not participate, the success of the American army would have been decreased significantly. They do not seem to belittle or devalue the efforts of the Native Americans as many have done in the past, which contributes to eliminating the stereotype of the vanishing Indian. The films also expose American society for it’s discrimination and hostility towards Americans, despite how important they were to the war effort and…

For example, the film displayed the unit full of fugitive slaves when in actuality, most of the unit was comprised of free men from Massachusetts. According to historians of the 54th Massachusetts History Channel documentary, “John A. Andrew only wanted to recruit free Black men because he felt that they wouldn’t be easily intimidated and will show initiative to their Confederate enemies.” (54th Massachusetts History Channel Documentary, 00:09:55-00:10:07). Furthermore, the film only portrayed one of the men as educated when a majority of the men of the unit were highly educated and actually much more literate than the Confederate men. Moreover, the dates in the film were not displayed as accurately as the actual events that took place in the 54th.…

This movie “glory” tells us the story of the 54th regiment of Massachusetts. This is a big moment in American history because it was one of the first times that colored men where allowed to be soldiers. This movie also shows us how colored soldiers were treated during the civil war. This movie gives us many examples of how different the colored soldiers were treated from the white soldiers. It shows us that even though there was no slavery in the north and colored people were free, there was still a lot of discrimination towards colored people.…

“Achievement has no color” (Abraham Lincoln), a quote that has arguably changed the nation and can be perceived in the Andrea Keuhnel short film “Us Against The World”. What Abraham Lincoln implied in the quote mentioned above is that a person’s skin pigmentation should have no effect on an individual’s potential to succeed. This conjecture can be seen in Keuhnel’s film because Cordia School’s basketball team mainly consisted of African- American students who were being oppressed due to their skin color and pushed to fail, despite their actual ability to do well in basketball. They were even beginning to believe that they were incapable of succeeding since people were sentencing them into profiles that are demeaning to their ethnicity. Due to the injustice racial profiling, Andrea Kuehnel created the show “Us…

God’s and Generals depiction of Civil War On November 19, 1863 President Abraham Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address after the ending of the Gettysburg War, which ended the Civil War as a whole. It can be said that the Civil War erupted due to the disagreement between states as it relates to slavery. The Gettysburg War was fought between the Union (the North) and the Confederates (the South). The Union wanted to do away with slavery and let African Americans have choices on where, how, and who they worked for while the confederates were content with slavery. The confederates even tried to argue that slaves had better lives living in America than in their native land Africa.…

John McCain stated how American soldiers struggled for their basic freedoms by stating, “Sitting there, with his eyes almost shut from his beating, making another American flag” (13). Making an American flag in a foreign country is a dangerous, yet bold move. The fierce act lead to demonstrate how Americans will fight for themselves and soldiers will fight for their countries. Minorities as well had fought for their rights countless times and continue to do so.
