This movie is based on the book Flags for Our Fathers written by John “Doc” Bradley’s son named James Bradley. One main thing that I found similar and accurate was when I looked up about The soldiers climbing Mount Suribachi I found much of the same information out of the movie. The United States continued pushing forward obtaining many airfields and inching closer to the rocky northern area. On February 23 Marines achieved the heights of Suribachi and heard resounding cheers and gunfire from those below. Associated Press Photographer Joe Rosenthal snapped an amazingly recognizable picture of men hoisting stars and stripes above the mountain. The raising of this flag to others symbolized hope but to the soldiers it was only a small time of triumph before the fighting of another month of a hard battle (Andrews). Also in the movie they said that the battle took 40 days and in my research I found that it took five weeks which is approximately 40 days! The approximately 5-week battle took a hit to the American forces, they left with nearly 7,000 Marines and Navy men dead and more than 20,000 wounded. When President Roosevelt heard this he was in shock about the numbers. the Japanese soldiers, who were instructed to fight until final death, lost around 21,000 men
