Essay On Flag Burning

Burning the American flag has been a controversial issue for many years. Flag burning is seen as a symbol of protest, and many see it as a slap in the face to service men and women, as well as an insult to America as a nation. Yet, others see it as a way to express feelings of disgust, saying it is harmless and our right as American’s to be able to desecrate the country’s flag. As our country evolves, the debate is still out, many insist burning the American flag should be against the law, others disagree and think it should remain legal; I, however, believe that in order to preserve our first amendment rights, flag burning should not be outlawed. In a number of countries, it is illegal to desecrate their flag. However, in the United States, it is not illegal to burn or desecrate the flag. I believe that if the rights are taken away to burn the flag it is an infringement of our first amendment rights. The Constitution and Bill of Rights were put into place to protect the people of America. Amending amendments is the first step in revoking our freedom. Also, banning desecration in all forms would ban replicas or components of the flag to be allowed on clothing, accessories, cakes, balloons, or anything else of the sort, because they would all be a desecration of the flag. Most of all, I do not believe flag burning being outlawed will make people respect the flag more, or that it will stop flag burning. I think it will take respect away from the flag. If given the choice to burn or desecrate the flag the majority of American’s will not because they respect the values it stands for.
