Jena McGregor acknowledges that Hollywood has diversity dealing with the ratio of blacks,

Hispanics and women is small compared to the amount of whites. Many people assume that it is

a problem because they are just not hiring diverse people to the acting career. In discussions of

“Fixing Hollywood’s Diversity Problem”, one controversial issue has been debated over. On the

one hand, Tim Gray argues “that it all starts with hiring”. Suggesting then it’s not dealing with

voting but dealing with no diverse people to vote for. On the other hand, the Los Angeles Times

The Racial/Cultural Identity Development Model (R/CID) by D.W. Sue and D. Sue was established in order to support counselors in the appreciation of their culturally diverse clients’ viewpoints and comportments (Sue & Sue, 2016). Within the R/CID, there are five stages: Conformity, Dissonance, Resistance and Immersion, Introspection, and Integrative Awareness. Each of these stages of development represents what oppressed citizens undergo as they labor to identify with who they are as they remain positioned between two racial systems. There a four subsequent views in each level of the identity process; an individual’s attitude toward self, toward others of the same group, towards others of a different marginalized group, and towards the dominant group. The goal of this paper is to define each of these stages and identify Malcom X‘s progress through each of these stages as presented in the movie about his…

In Deadline 's online magazine, the article first titled “ Pilots 2015: The Year of Ethnic Casting – About Time or Too Much of a Good Thing” but later edited to “Pilots 2015: The Year of Ethnic Casting” written on March 24, 2015 by Nellie Andreeva, expresses a concern for the growing number of African American representation on televison. Andreeva suggests that the entertainment industry may be reaching a point where they will have to restrict the number of African American shows they air or African-American actors they cast due to “too much” representation. Throughout her editorial, she neglects to properly analyze the demand for this representation and the role it should play in the entertainment industry, while also demonstrating non-progressive views by making segregated points, and undermining the need for racial quotas and affirmative action.…

For example, from a recruitment perspective being inclusive could provide access to a wider pool of candidates, new talent, skills and lead to confident and happier staff.” Not only does having representation create positive effects in television or movies, but business as well. Another positive effect of diversity in the media is that for example, if a child sees a movie Disney’s Moana, about a young Polynesian princess from the island of Motunui and travel’s the vast ocean on a journey by herself to save her island from immense doom. This is the type of movie where there is a woman of color, being a heroine and not a damsel in distress; this creates a positive message for children of color because they finally a heroine that possibly looks like themselves. Thus this could be inspiring for them to feel more comfortable in their own skin and want to be a hero like Moana as they grow up; that boost…

The video that I chose is from this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, which celebrates works of excellence in the television industry. It’s Viola Davis’ acceptance speech after she won the Emmy Award for Best Actress in a drama series. She became the first African-American women in the ceremony’s 67-year history to win in that category. She used this large platform as an opportunity to address the lack of diversity in the entertainment industry and what essentially stands in the way of women of color to be successful.…

Minorities on Broadway have come a long way since the late 1800s. This Broadway season, diversity is front and center whether it is on stage or in the audience. “About 80 percent of Broadway ticket-buyers are white, according to the Broadway League, but the percentages of black, Hispanic and Asian theatergoers have all risen significantly over the last decade; the League’s program to increase the Hispanic audience size, called Viva Broadway, is chaired by Mr. Miranda’s father, the political consultant Luis A. Miranda Jr (Paulson).” From shows like In The Heights, Les Miserables, West Side Story, On Your Feet and Hamilton we have seen a tremendous increase in cultural and racial diversity among the casts of these musicals within the past few…

The lack of Hispanic representations in the film industry is an important reason why there are prejudices and stereotypes in the industry. In fact, there are not many Hispanics who succeed to work in cinema. As mentioned by De Cones “bias appears to be a direct result of the systematic exclusion of Hispanic/Latinos from positions of authority in the Hollywood power structure” (32). Latinos are almost automatically excluded from higher position in the film industry. This suggests that the vision of Hispanic people in movie are created by people who do not have an idea of the reality of Latinos.…

Most of the time, the characters are all one race and that race is,more often than not ,white. The previous assumption has been lately confirmed with the 2015 Emmy’s and the 2016 Oscars. In last years Emmy’s, Viola Davis became the first African American woman to win the the award for ‘Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series’ maybe due to the fact that “[b]lacks., especially black women, are not being given roles like their white counterparts. There is a mindset that says movies with Blacks in leading roles won 't sell”(Sandra Evers-Manley, NAACP). Although Davis’ win was a huge enough monument for the black community, it was her acceptance speech that really stood out that night.…

For instance common representations of the Afro Caribbean community in England and the African American community in America is that as a community they keep themselves to themselves and that there is a ‘us and them’ atmosphere when it comes to people of colour and Caucasians. Although there are acceptations to these statistics when it comes to race and the characters a certain race portrays, it is a frightening image. For instance in the top 500 grossing films in the years 2007-2012, 75.8% of speaking characters were portrayed by white actors. Whereas only 12.4% of them were portrayed by black actors. In the same study…

Having an underrepresented director may have facilitated more underrepresented characters being cast on screen in film, television, or digital series. Additionally, communities are aware of Hollywood views but are inactive in fighting the stereotypes. A study, “The Multicultural Economy by the University of Georgia”, notes that Latinos make up 25% of movie ticket sales and “command roughly $1 trillion in spending power.” This illustrates how Latinos are able to use their power and boycott the films that have negative stereotypes towards Latinos. The communities can look back at the 1922 Mexico boycott against Hollywood films.…

Political Power Our text identifies multiple contributing factors that limit the political power of Latinos as a group in the United States. However, there is a strong argument that non-citizenship and poor English, language skills are the two main contributing factors. Major political parties are recognizing the weight the Hispanic population could carry in an election, and have begun to reach out to members of the community. A multilingual ballot is now required by Federal law in districts who have at least 5 percent of the eligible voting population that do not speak English.…

Many children still today ask themselves the question of "Who looks like me?" when watching a movie. The children are searching for someone who they can relate to, someone who resonates with them the most, however that can not be found with the lack of representation in movies. Diversity in media, books, toys, and other mediums is an aspect in America that needs reformation. Since the United States is seen as the melting pot of the world, one would believe erroneously that the United State is teeming with diversity with respect to the formerly stated mediums.…

According to Oxford Dictionary, racism is “The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races” (Oxford). Racism in the U.S. Justice System has been a problem for decades. The societal beliefs and prejudices from some officers cause them to target certain minorities at a higher rate. These beliefs may have been ingrained in their upbringing and carries into their jobs. It is a big problem if the police officers and the court system put their own personal beliefs in the way of the law and are prosecuting minorities unfairly.…
