When every student is entangled in taking all 3 Sciences or all 4 Maths courses in order to get into an good program, they do not get the chance to take courses in the Social Science and Arts fields that they might be interested. It is true that students should know what their plan for the future is before grade 12 and grade 11 was the year intended for students to explore their strengths and weaknesses, but because there are so many prerequisites in grade 11 that students must take in order to take most grade 12 courses such as science and math that have prerequisites and do not allow for any other courses to be taken. This is why the fifth year should be mandatory for all high school students because it allows students to complete prerequisites but also explore a variety of courses. Also, the fifth year allows students to take courses they are curious or interested about. Many students are taught at a very young age that if they wanted to be successful in the future they must take either Sciences or Math courses. Being taught this at such a young age, students are led to believe high paying and respected careers belong in the Science or Mathematics field, this is completely false, because there are many other jobs that are respected and are well paying that do not require …show more content…

By doing this, students will be less stressed about getting into a specific post-secondary school or program. The more programs, students will be applying to, the greater the possibility of them getting into a post-secondary school. Many people believe that most students only have an interest and hope getting into a specific field, and not getting into that field will cause depression and they will be discouraged to pursue a career. This is false, because by applying to more programs, students will be encouraged to not only work harder but also to pursue a career in other fields they might be interested in. Most students do not get discouraged by not getting into a certain program, but get discouraged for not getting into a post-secondary school at all. The fifth year allows for students to apply to many different schools and this causes students to have a higher increase into getting into a post secondary school. A student's GPA, which means Grade Point Average, also plays a crucial role into admission into a post secondary school.
