Five Step Approach In Nursing

In determining whether or not a study provides sufficient evidence for making decisions in clinical practice, a five-step approach can be used. These steps, as described by Schmidt and Brown, 2012, are as follows: Ask, Acquire, Appraise, Apply and Assess. The first step, “Ask”, refers to asking the right question. The question must be specific, well-constructed and have clear objectives (Aromataris, 2014). The second step, “Acquire”, refers to the complex search through literature required to find the best research or evidence available to answer the question. As many studies as possible, published and unpublished, on the topic of interest should be located (Aromataris, 2014). The third step is “Appraise”. The material found must be evaluated for validity and applicability. Does the evidence answer the clinical question? Is the study trustworthy (Aromataris, 2014)? In the fourth step, “Apply”, recommendations and findings are revealed and are applied to nursing practice (Schmidt & Brown, 2012).
