Five Nursing Pillars

Caring in the Nursing Field The profession of nursing is built on the support of the Conceptual Framework Pillars. These five pillars are what keep the foundation of the nursing profession strong. These pillars shape a nurse into becoming hard working and successful. The five pillars help nursing students throughout their education process and it helps a nursing student to learn and develop as they go through the program. These five pillars all play an important role throughout a nurse’s career. The five pillars include Caring, Communication, Critical Thinking, Professionalism, and Holism. We have Caring, Communication, Critical Thinking, Professionalism and Holism. Caring is a nurses connection with there patient or patients and their compassion towards not only there patient but to their colleagues and other professionals around them. Communication can be verbal or nonverbal. Communication is the way you interact with an individual. Being in the nursing field you learn communication is different between certain individuals. Cultural and language differences play a role and how a nurse goes about communicating with there patient. Critical Thinking is one of the first things nurses learn through their process in nursing school. It is a thought process that goes beyond the basics. Critical thinking requires analysis and decision-making. Critical thinking is like starting in basic math and then advancing to algebra, more steps are required to get to the conclusion. Professionalism is a standard of practice that nurses follow; it includes both legal and ethical issues. Professionalism is also the way a nurse carries themselves, the way they speak, and they way they deal with certain situations. Then there is Holism. Holism is the person as a whole. It’s recognizing the person’s culture, and religion and being able to provide the best care you can to that patient. Like artist they all come from different backgrounds and they all started their journey in different ways, but they all have a love and passion for what they do. They care for there art work like nurses care for their patients. Like artist communicate through their drawings and paintings, nurses communicate through their work and to their patients whether it be through speaking, writing or even sign language. We find ways to communicate to different people. When a painter paints there is more than just a basic thought process to there artwork, there is concept map they make up in their minds to create what they do, and like nursing and critical thinking there are steps and analysis to get to a conclusion or a decision. Professionalism is how a nurse carries themselves in the field of nursing, and like artist there is a time in which professionalism is seen when promoting their work or giving an art show. As a nurse we see our patient as a whole, We see more than just their physical being, but we see there culture, there religion and personal views as we care for them. Like artist, not one is the same, and everyone on of them sees the world differently, and just like our patients all them are different. Although an artist artwork and a nurses patients are all different in there on way we all care for each one in the same. Like a painting it tells a story, and every patient we care for through out our career brings a different story and a
