Five Forms Of Gluttony Analysis

In this week’s chapter of Glittering Vices Rebecca Konyndyk DeYoung gives an acronym for five forms of gluttony, F.R.E.S.H. This acronym stands for “eating fastidiously, ravenously, excessively, sumptuously, [and] hastily” (DeYoung, 141). I find that each of these different types of gluttonous activities have varying degrees of sinfulness. Therefore, in the following paragraphs, I will explain why I rank the forms in the following order from least to most sinful: fastidiously, hastily, sumptuously, ravenously, and excessively. First, I chose fastidious gluttony as the least sinful of the forms of gluttony. One way that DeYoung describes this type of glutton is the following, “They arrive at the table focused on their expectation of getting a certain pleasure and with an equally focused determination to do whatever it takes to get it. They may use good manners and eat moderate amounts, but the desire behind it all is the drive to get pleasure for themselves” (DeYoung, 142). Thus, I do not find this form as particularly bad because everyone has different tastes and preferences when it comes to food, so I do not see anything wrong with wanting food “to get pleasure for themselves.” When we have the option, everyone prefers to eat food that is pleasing to themselves. Eating excessively is described as, “one who will eat past the point of fullness for the sake of indulging her tastes. Even when she knows she will feel sick or bloated later, she takes another helping, savoring every mouthful” (DeYoung, 144). This is the worst form of gluttony because it is eating “past the point of fullness” and can cause actual physical harm to the glutton. This gluttonous activity is contrary to the purpose of eating, which includes gaining nutrition and energy from the foods we eat. This type of gluttony should be avoided the most because food is treated as a pleasure far beyond its natural

In the 2000 article, “Goal Replace Risk Assessment With Alternative Assessment”, author Mary O’Brien poses many strengths in comparison to the article, “The Pleasure of eating”, by author Wendell Berry. Throughout “Goal Replace Risk Assessment with Alternative Assessment”, Mary O’Brien informs readers about the provincial approach of risk assessment and how, as a society, we should take a more open alternative method towards estimating damages. O’brien delineates the flaw when conducting risk assessment because assessors do not tend to not think about all the costs added up when it comes time to making decisions. In other words, we do not take all factors into consideration thus leading to poor decision making. However, O’Brien elaborates…

Marissa Fessenden, in her magazine “Do You Make Better Decisions When Hungry?” (October 27, 2014), looks at how hunger affect people’s decisions and actions. Although experience tells us that a growling stomach makes people impulsive therefore affected their decisions in a bad way, Fessenden says otherwise. She states that hunger actually causes people to make better decisions. To support this statement, Fessenden shows “three different experiments that paired fasting with a decision-making task to see how being hungry affects the choices we make.”…

The first part in the series, The Inferno, depicts Dante’s pilgrimage into the underworld of Hell. The epic describes Dante’s descent in an attempt to get back on a spiritual path. The Inferno was created with the purpose of telling the politics of Florence and combining ideas of Pagan and Greek religion (“Literary Background”). Dante’s work also portrays his hatred for the corrupt politicians of his era, as he sends them to Hell for the sins they have committed (“Historical Background”).…

In everyday life, dieting is the food a person consumes that can show what is and what is not healthy to eat. So, how does someone determine what is healthy or not because everyone in this world has a different body type. However, two authors have set out to write on such a topic. Michael Pollan, a nutritionist (Bullock 850), writes “Escape from the Western Diet” which is about Americans should completely cut out the Western diet because it consists of mostly processed food that is unhealthy for the body (Pollan 851). On the other hand, Mary Maxfield’s, a graduate student (Bullock 872), writes “Food as Thought: Resisting the Moralization of Eating” which is about how people should not moralize food because it is their body and they should be…

The Dangers of Competitive Eating People all over the United States are voluntarily giving themselves terrible health problems because of what they call a “sport”. This dangerous act is Competitive Eating. Competitive Eating is the act of eating high amounts of typically unhealthy foods for a prize, fame, money, or fun. The biggest competitive eating event is Nathan’s Annual Hot Dog Eating Competition, in which the record is 35 hot dogs over 10 minutes. The risk of Competitive Eating is not worth the rewards, because the sport permanently modifies body function, doesn’t yield much income, and is dangerous to the eater’s personal health.…

Feeding Desire: Fatness, Beauty, and Sexuality among a Saharan People written by Rebecca Popenoe, explores the traditions and ideals of beauty cherished by the semi-nomadic Moors in the Azawagh area in the Niger basin. This particular culture believes in the practice of active fattening of their young girls and valued feminine ideal for them is one of extreme fatness and voluptuous immovability, which is believed to beautify their bodies, accelerate puberty, enhance sexuality, and ripen them for marriage. This ideal contrasts with Western culture values and demonstrates how beauty ideals can only be understood within specific cultures and their social structures. Following is an overview of the book, the discussion of interesting aspects: the relation of fatness to the Muslim religion, the importance of milk to a female’s body and in the culture, and the comparison of their culture to Western ideals, and a critical evaluation of the appeal, readability, and significance of this ethnography.…

Indulgences are one of the most controversial traditions in the Catholic Church. They have impacted the Church for hundreds of years and were a major factor in the Protestant schism within Christianity. Indulgences have had positive results but are often abused. The Church’s Confession of Faith (CCF) is a reliable source for a detailed explanation of what indulgences are and how they work, but fails to capture the importance of indulgences in a historical context and their impact on Christianity. CCF begins the analysis of indulgences by describing what an indulgence is and the underlying preconditions for it to be received.…
