The treat of substitute food is considerably small. Small retail outlets and stores are no competition to Tesco, considering their quality at lower prices. Tesco also managed to create competition to the small stores by opening Express stores themselves. To become a new competitor to Tesco one must have a large amount of capital. Apart from capital they must establish good marketing and good rand name. New competitors must also have very low prices and very good quality in order to be Tesco’s new competitors, making it very low probability.
Intensive competition rivalry is intensely steep in the food industry. Tesco main competitors have increased their market share and therefore Tesco’s position is being threatened by Sainsbury Asda, Morrisions, Aldi, Waitrose and Lidl since they have all increased their market share.
Bargaining powers of buyers are considerably high especially were the products have nearly negligent differences, consumers eventually switch from on brand to another brand. Consumers look for lowest price and have the commodity to buy online so as to compare the prices
