The music video for Five Finger Death Punch’s song Wrong Side of Heaven brings to light an unfortunate side of the war machine of the United States of America. The US military trains its soldiers to be iron engines of destruction, and when a soldier buckles under the pressure of those expectations, they will often conceal the crack in their ‘mental armor’ out of a fear of being believed useless. It was only when the suicide rate for active duty soldiers began to outpace the number of combat deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan that the US military began to realize how much of a problem combat stress and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have become. While the US military is making efforts to treat and prevent combat stress and PTSD, they have allies in the effort to aid active duty soldiers and veterans. Operation Supply Drop (OSD) has made its mission “to provide a community connection to troops through video games and digital entertainment” (Operation Supply Drop). OSD is a charity that supports active duty soldiers and veterans by sending care packages that contain video games for soldiers and veterans in war zones and hospitals. Captain Machuga started OSD initially to assist Geoff, a comrade of his from Iraq. Geoff had recently reenlisted and was returning to Iraq immediately, and consequently found himself the recipient of the first supply drop of OSD (Operation Supply Drop). Captain Machuga has expanded even further with his 8-bit Salute. The 8-bit Salute is a year-round event in which gamers stream themselves playing games of any type for twenty-four hours to raise funds for OSD (Operation Supply Drop).
