In July of 2010, my great grandmother, Mama Eva, slipped and fell in Ocean City, Maryland. That summer I was on trip with Mama Eva, grandmother, great aunt and great uncle. It was the first full day of our five-day trip. In the morning, Mama Eva was going to use the bathroom when she slipped and fell. She slipped because a bottle of laundry detergent fell and the liquid detergent leaked on to the ceramic tile floor. No one had noticed that the bottle had fallen over in the night in the laundry closet next to the kitchen. The injuries caused by this fall were more severe due to her age which was 90 at the time. Mahatma Gandhi once said,”There is a sufficiency in the world for man’s need but not for man’s greed.” Organ donation is an issue facing our society today, but luckily it has a solution.…

Years ago a commercial appeared on television portraying an elderly woman lying on the floor screaming for help after she had fallen to the ground sustaining an injury for which she was unable to get up on her own. The image is burned in my memory. Unfortunately, this scene has been a reality for many older adults who have fallen not only at home but while hospitalized. There are many versions of the definition of a fall. The World Health Organization defined a fall as “an event which results in a person coming to rest inadvertently on the ground or floor or other lower level” (Falls, 2012, para.1).…

It was the summer of 2007, and my parents thought that it would be a brilliant idea to go on a family road trip to some unknown location.
