Five Cognate Strategies of Business Writing The five cognate strategies that I have chosen to write about for this assignment are clarity, credibility, tone, emphasis, and engagement. These strategies are some of the various approaches and tools to help convey important facts to others. I have decided to write about these five strategies because I have used them to communicate effectively with managers and co-workers in the workplace. Clarity: A writer must communicate clearly in order to transfer a message in an effective way. My goal was to make sure that my manager heard the most critical points first. At the end of my presentation he approved the most important issues. I believe that using the correct emphasis during my proposal helped him consider the most important issues. Engagement: A writer can engage the reader by using many techniques, one being personal experiences. These techniques help create a relationship with the reader. The writer must be familiar with the topic as well as the audience in order to be able to create a connection. My manager is not very familiar with every single aspect of my department and during my presentation I used the engagement strategy to lay out each step of the process. I provided examples of previews situations our department experienced, he became more engaged and move forward with the proposal. The use of cognate strategies can dramatically help many writers to communicate their message more effectively.
