The definition of culture is defined as the complex whole of a society. The culture/identity of a society consists of beliefs, values, customs, language, laws and so on. All societies share five major characteristics that define their specific culture. These five basic characteristics are that they are learned, shared, based on symbols, integrated, and dynamic.
Culture is learned through what we are taught by family, friends and other members of society. It is learned by the action of others that we witness and our experiences within society. Just as one learns right from wrong from their parents, one also learns what is accepted or not accepted within the culture of our society.
Culture is shared when the better part of society exists by many common factors. Most nations have a predominant language that one learns from birth. The French value family over all other aspects of life. The average full time worker takes seven weeks of paid vacation per year. They also work shorter weeks. The French culture is very polite, reserved, and dignified. When asking for something, they say "Je voudrais" (I would like), rather than saying I want. Politeness is highly valued and they view this as a much more polite way of asking for something. The elderly are highly valued for their wisdom and are treated with the utmost respect. The French also place a high value on directness. Many foreigners misinterpret this directness, or bluntness, for rudeness. They have little time for lengthy conversations with anyone other than family members. Time has no meaning to them and they enjoy flexible schedules.
