Fitting In With Others In The Outsiders, By S. E. Hinton

Fitting in isn't always an easy thing to do. In The Outsiders by S.E Hinton some characters alter their personalities to blend in with others. The common theme that is constantly popping up in this book is, people aren’t always what they seem. Nothing can apply to the real world better than this. In The Outsiders by S.E Hinton many people act different around others than who they really are. One example of this is the character Dallas Winston (Dally). Dally ran into a burning fire to help his friends escape. He cares about everyone but nobody more than his best friend Johnny. The other view on Dally is that he is a very immature individual, he likes to pick fights and is tougher than nails. This description of Dally is what …show more content…
Another character that is different than they seem is Ponyboy Curtis (Pony). Pony is a kind, caring, and understanding person who wouldn't hurt a fly. He is always there when his friends are in need and would sacrifice almost anything to help them . When Pony hangs out with his gang he can fit in and make it look like he is a J.D and a tough greaser. The more he hangs out with his gang the more the socs mistake his true identity. Comparing Johnny Cade to Pony is a very fair comparison. Just like Ponyboy, Johnny is misunderstood. He has an abusive home life, but he is always the for his friends even when it may mean getting in serious trouble. For example, Pony and Johnny ran away from home and got jumped be a gang of socs. When Ponyboy was in the process of getting drowned by a soc named Bob, Johnny took out his switchblade and killed Bob. If Pony wouldn't have been in trouble Johnny wouldn't have killed that soc. The socs thought that Johnny killed him for no reason and were furious at him, …show more content…
When applied to reality this is extremely true. To illustrate a picture for you, Adrian Peterson, a Minnesota Vikings running back, is one of the best in the game today. He is always on track, working hard, and helping out in the public. Adrian Peterson is a huge role model to kids, or at least he was. In September of 2014, Peterson was arrested for child abuse. He allegedly struck his child multiple times with a tree branch claiming it was a legal k3 way of punishment. The more the fans of Adrian Peterson know him the less like a role model he becomes. Another example of the theme is, Harry Styles a member of the band One Direction. At just sixteen years of Harry tried out to be the next big pop singer on, The X Factor. During his time on the show he attracted many fans. He had made it very far and the judges decided to put him in a group with four other members, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson. Soon and after many hours of vocal critiquing, all of their hard work payed off. They had transformed into the band we all know today, but did anyone ever know anything about Harry's past life? Before Harry auditioned, he worked in a bakery and love to cook. He also was planning on going to college to study Law, Sociology and Business. For a final career Harry wanted to be a psychologist. A normal person wouldn't just know this. Harry had a whole

In “The Outsiders”, S.E. Hinton created more than twenty characters each having diverse personalities, which causes readers to feel a certain way about them, such as admiration or hatred. For example, Sodapop Curtis would make the perfect bae, because of his charming personality. Additionally, if Darrel Curtis, Soda’s older brother, were a real person, he would most likely become someone's frenemy, due to his actions and words. While Dallas Winston would be the ideal person to be eliminated from the young adult novel. So, the three characters’ different actions, words, and personalities, cause people to conclude that their bae would be Sodapop, Darry would be their frenemy, and lastly, they would desire for the seventeen-year-old Dally to be eliminated.…

The Outsiders is a unique book that is stylistic in the author’s usage of character development. Each character is described and developed with very much detail, but the movie lacked this certain sense of character development. This is extremely apparent with the main character Ponyboy Curtis. An example of his physical characteristics that differed from the movie is on page 1 when he states, “I have light-brown, almost red hair and greenish-gray eyes.”…
