Fitness Observation

During this observation one of the first things I notice was how large the gymnasium was. For this class and class period I got to see how the teacher really took advance of it and used it to her benefit. Due to the fact the space was large enough allowed all the students’ time to participate in activities with minimal time lost in waiting and transition. As a result of a shorter wait time allowed the students to be active or participate in class longer. During this period I got to observe how the teacher really utilized her space in the gym for an introduction to the lesson as well as the activities that followed. This particular teacher used this opportunity to review student’s prior learning and knowledge while incorporating ELA standards. The teacher used a quick “K-W-L” chart. The chart was broken down into three columns and allowed students to write …show more content…
She used recognition checks that required students to give her a thumbs up or down if they understood or not and she also used verbal check such as “what do you do when the music stops” ? As an observer of the class I think it was easy to see how the teacher implemented assessments in the lesson. For example the K-W-L graphic organizer used as an assessment helped students to monitor their learning about the topic while creating a visual representation that kept the students engaged. In my opinion this connects directly to the course discussion from week one. From observing the lesson it was clear that the teacher was purposeful in planning her assessments and when she used them. She planned learning experiences and instruction before for the students, which also allowed students to think about and reflect on the topic at hand. I did not get to see what some of the students wrote for the KWL charts but I can only imagine they used appropriate language and writing, which also connects to common

Field Experience at Wildwood and Ernest Manning My cohort of ten was assigned to visit two schools over a two-week period with a full week dedicated to each location. The two schools were Wildwood elementary and Ernest Manning high school and while their relative closeness to one another would suggest that some Wildwood students may eventually be at Ernest Manning, they are opposites in terms of their status, how they carry themselves, and what they believe to be most important for students. Wildwood elementary is an old school as observed from its small and outdated architecture. Classes are small and at times claustrophobic, especially when packed with 20-25 of the nearly 600 students making it difficult if not impossible to navigate the…

Observation of Scott McCandless Reflection #5 When I first started this ten hour practicum project I had very little information, outside of participating in observations, about what it takes to evaluate a teacher. There are so many steps to the evaluation process that it can become over whelming if you are not well versed in; The Danielson framework, scripting, and communication. These are the three areas that I have grown the most in during this project. When I first started this project I already had some background knowledge of the Danielson Framework.…

At the beginning of each day, as a student educational assistant (EA), I walk around and make sure that every student has their kanga pouch out of their bags. The teacher and I asked the students to do their daily routine such as taking out their kanga pouch, wearing their indoor shoes, and checking their names on the smart board for attendance. After doing their daily routine, the teacher starts the day with some calendar lessons. Student EA’s were asked to prepare the centers or activity. Each center has different types of activity.…

On Friday May 13 I was able to observe two P.E. classes at Mt. Stuart Elementary. There were two sections which I observed, first group was a 1st grade class and then a kindergarten class. It was a very cool experience, since I don’t remember P.E. classes back when I was young. One thing I enjoyed was the teacher’s enthusiasm when the students walked into the gym. He welcomed each student with a smile and with excitement.…

When I had my interview with my host teacher, she mentioned that her assessment philosophy for her students is an end of the unit assessment to see how well her students understand the material that was taught. If the students don’t get the questions correct she will go back and reteach the material a different way to see if the students get a better understanding. She likes to use hands on activities, allowing the students to make choices, educational online games, and collaborating. The school’s philosophy is NWEA (1977), which is MAP testing, and Children’s Progress Academic Assessment (CPAA, 2014), which tests math and reading. All of these assessment philosophies are linked to the Common Core Standards (n.d.).…

On Tuesday, October 20, 2015, I observed a fourth-grade class at Media Elementary School in Media, PA. The teacher was Mrs. Williamsons, and there was also a student teacher, Emily in the class. I was there most of the day and observed Mathematics, Social studies, Reading, and Writing class. Also, there was a sitting area with a rug and that was closer to the electronic board, where students sat for watching any videos for the class, and during the Reading class.…

INTASC Standards: 8, 9 Standard #8 - “The teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social and physical development of the learner (Henson, 2009).” As a teacher it is important to use a variety of assessments to evaluate and ensure that students understand and are learning the content presented in the classroom. In addition to giving traditional assessments such as a quiz, exam or paper, alternatives that will be provided include group assessments, self-assessment, portfolios, observations and performance assessments. By applying varied assessment methods a check for understanding of a student’s knowledge will be better assessed since there are limitations with different types of evaluations.…

In order to use assessments to improve instruction, one must go through intensive, strategic planning to determine what will be assessed, why it is being assessed, and how it will be assessed. By beginning this process, it immediately creates a familiarity with standards that otherwise would not be as concrete. The ability to pick apart standards to determine outcomes assists in the creation of specific evidence to show that a student has reached mastery of the learning goal. When a teacher understands the content that is being taught, the instruction within the classroom ultimately improves as more explicit to the learning goal at hand. Creating assessments to utilize within a classroom or grade level gives the educator themself a base…
