Proposal- Too many college students are stressed, overwhelmed, and depressed leading to lower grades and lower self-esteem. According to Emory University’s suicide statistics in the United States, there are more than 1,000 suicides on college campuses per year. The National Alliance on Mental Illness reported that 64 percent of college students drop out of school because of mental health issues. CSUB does offer counseling and other services to assist with these issues, but the numbers are not going down. Students should be required to take one fitness class of their choice each semester to help with stress and other related issues.
Analysis of problem- The class ensures all students are participating. The system will be very similar to high school physical education curriculum. Freshman and sophomore year everyone had to take P.E. in order to graduate. Yes, everyone complained, however everyone did benefit from the course. Students need physical exercise to keep their brain moving. There is a connection between stress and exercise. Students will be able to let their stress out in an appropriate setting and burn some calories. According to the American Intercontinental University website provides the benefits of exercising. Taking on a fitness class of your choice gives students a chance to explore a different side of CSUB they may have not seen before and gives the students options on what class best fits their schedule. So the school does not have to worry if the courses being overwhelming full. By making fitness a requirement officials can better study the impact of fitness on college students. The results can be seen in the deduction of suicides and on campus depression. Improvement of grades and higher self- esteem will rise as
