III. Case Study: Fisher Elementary with Mrs. Torrent’s 1st Grade Class
For about 6 weeks this spring semester, I had been visiting Fisher Elementary that is part of Northside ISD. It is located on 3430 Barrel Pass by 1604 and Highway 90. This area in particular is very well known to be heavy populated by a lot of military families for the reason that the area is very close to Lackland Air Force Base. Many of those active in the military come from different parts of the country in which brings diversity into the area. The homes around the school look fairly new and well maintained in which tells me that the community here is only getting bigger over time. On my way driving to Fisher for the first time, I had noticed that they are other schools located fairly close, in which I wondered if they all had some sort of connection. When I had gone for orientation, the principal of the school, Mr. Jeff Davenport, was very informative and gave a lot of background information about Fisher. The class began Math with a “Math Mountain” in which students have set problems to solve on the screen and students solve a new set every day. Mrs. Torrent had a lot of manipulatives on hand in which helped students visually comprehend what was going on. Students were encouraged to work with one another in content as they shard some of these manipulatives and students looked engaged and entertained with this. At the end of the math section, the students did 15 minutes of math centers in where students worked together in stations on certain things. One station had addition while another station had fractions. Mrs. Torrent says she changes stations on a weekly bases and student are mixed in randomly, in which they get to practice all sorts of
