To begin, in my community I have come to respect those who help others in food pantries and in special needs schools through personal experience. One day my mom and I took a new route to my grandparents house and we came across the RCS Food Pantry. The next day we pulled up and talked to this sweet lady and she said that we could help package food for the homeless, so every Monday we would go and help out, it was a touching experience to see the look the homeless gave us when we gave them the food. One man I talked to was in the military and wasn't able to get a job because of his PTSD, it was sad the way he ended up but I vowed to help in the ways I knew how.…

Homelessness has become normal in America because it is always seen as the effect of individual choices. Because of this, many fear and re-categorize (putting them in a different social class) the homeless. In Sacramento, statistics show that nearly 65% of veterans make up the homeless population.…

The difference between betterment and development stems from the concept that, “Betterment gives a man a fish, development teaches a man how to fish.” This phrase supports that development offers immediate relief, whereas development offers solutions to the cause of the societal issue. Lupton explains that, development requires the building of relationships and critical thinking due to the complexity of a vast amount of societal issues. During my two volunteer experiences I participated in for the service learning portion of this class, I had the opportunity to witness many different walks of life. I was taken in on a side of poverty I’ve never before seen, and on a very intimate level. My first volunteer experience this semester was at a local food pantry, the Pratt-Quigley center. The neighborhood around the food pantry seemed very run down and poor. Shortly after arriving there, we were directed to the room where all the food was stored after it had been donated, waiting to be sorted.…
