4. Yes, it is likely that there will be competitive exclusion between the fish and ducks. Competitive exclusion does not only mean that one species is killed off it also means that it can “also result in two species sharing different parts of a niche”(pg.249). The ducks and fish don’t share the same ecological niche which is “the part of the environment that a species uses to survive and reproduce”(pg.248). This is also proven by the fact that it states in the textbook that “the fish use a different part of the habitat’s resources than the ducks”(pg.248). Although the ducks and fish share the same habitat they do not share the same niche. These points and the evidence shows that it is likely that there will be competitive

This type of symbiosis is called commensalism. The mites get their food by eating the dead skin cells and oils that are released by our skin. This is commensalism because “a relationship in which one organism benefits and the other organism neither benefits nor is harmed”(pg.250). The organism that benefits are the mites as shown by the text “the mites benefit from the relationship by eating dead skin cells and oils released by your skin”(pg.251). The organism that is unaffected is us which is noted in the text “You are not harmed, nor does this benefit you”(pg.251). All of these facts show that this type of symbiosis is …show more content…
The main difference between parasitism and predation is that in one of these words the organism does not die it is slowly drained of energy. Predation is when “one organism captures and feeds upon another organism”(pg.250). This is completely different from parasitism which “is a relationship in which one species benefits and the other is harmed”(pg.250). One of the differences is that in predation “the organism captures and feeds upon another organism”(pg.250) while in parasitism the parasite does not have to kill its organism to feed upon it. Also, in parasitism, the parasite doesn’t want its host to die, so it only takes as much as the host can take so it won’t die along with the host. While the organism in predation just kills the other organism in an instant and eats it. All of these points show how parasitism and predation are

Interdependence is the dependence of every living organism on all other living things and natural resources in the environment including, air water, and soil. This includes both abiotic and biotic factors. These organisms need each other to live. Without interdependence, the whole food web would collapse. SeaWorld is a multi-million dollar corporation that serves as home for 23 of arguably some of the oceans’ most beautiful creatures. Blackfish is trying to change that with a very captivating argument. Although emotionally compelling, Blackfish is an invalid argument against captivity, It offers a solution and demonstrates practicality, which makes it an argument of policy. However, it is not a valid one, for it lacks a strong and reliable foundation of evidence to support its reasoning for the solution it demands. Blackfish presents former trainers and scientific representatives who present facts about SeaWorld, as well as scientific claims that object to captivity.…

(Neff et al, 2015) Hatchery raised salmon exhibit reproductive behaviors that differ widely from wild salmon that result in hatchery males fertilizing 62% as many eggs as wild males (Neff et al, 2015.) Although this could mean less reproductive competition for wild male salmon, that trait could spread throughout hybrid salmon populations and lead to a reduction in salmon populations due to the high reproductive failure…

    1. My favorite parasitism example Ed Yong spoke about was the Ampulex compressa, or the emerald cockroach wasp. The wasp ability and understanding of how to blindly seek particular sections of the brain using only it’s stinger is simply fascinating. Not only does the wasp find the particular sections needed, it then implants venom into specific clusters of neurons. The ability to implant a particular part of the body into another organism and manipulate that organism, all without being able to see inside, simply amazes me.…

There are many examples of symbiotic relationships in Disney’s The Lion King. A symbiotic relationship is the interaction between two species living closely together. Mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism are the three main categories of symbiotic relationships. These relationships are important in maintaining a stable ecosystem because they are similar to cause and effect.…

Invasive species can set up unfavorable relationships with the native species in the invaded ecosystem. Kornis, Sharma, Jake Vander Zanden, and Ricciardi, the scientists behind the study “Invasion Success and Impact of an Invasive Fish, Round Goby, in Great Lakes Tributaries“ (2013), stated that some causes for calamitous relationships are because of “diet and habitat overlap” (p 186). When competing for resources in an environment in which native species typically had no issue, the host species often have a harder time winning this competition. This ultimately leads to a lack of abundance. An invasion of a cladoceran in the Black Seas during the 1980s resulted in such an occurrence.…

In Neil Shubins’ “Your Inner Fish: A Journey Into the 3.5-Billion-Year History of the Human Body”, he takes the audience on the journey of the discovery and history of how different organisms and adaptations have converged to form a relationship between fish and tetrapods. Shubins first relates the evolutionary fact that humans and other forms of “tetrapods’ major body systems have developed from fish and sharks” (20), through his time on the field as a paleontologist. He describes his multiple experiences of planning, preparing, excavating, and analyzing not only the fossils found by his team, but also where and when in the rock these artifacts were found. His research and expenditures led to discoveries of bones and fossils that he would…
